A sense of space is a defining feature of Chris Fitkin’s music, and never more so than in Serpen Sonatas. It’s a sense of space that may evoke something on the border of peace and loss. Yet this heartfelt atmosphere is informed by a clear, disciplined and sophisticated structure. For all its apparent freedom and ease this is music sculpted with thought and consideration. And from the peaceful or bleak emptiness passages of intense rhythmic activity and excitement emerge.
